PaPeR, ScIsSoRs, and rOcK for RESISTance: ZiNe CreATion WoRkShoP
Location: Todd 411
1:00 - 2:20pm on Friday, April 4th
(Zine: self published, small booklet, collective creation, containing RADICAL WORDS!)
Progressive conferences provide radical dialogue, ideas of change, and visions of transformation. In order to transmit these ideas and engender community based action and knowledge we must have the proper tools. As Ani Difranco sings, “Every tool is a weapon if you hold it right.” Zines provide the tools for resistance to bridge these theories and action. Thus, it is my goal in the Paper, Scissor, and Rock for Resistance workshop to engage in community dialogue about change and connect them to the pages of a zine in a way to create community knowledge.
For the workshop I plan to have an open forum in which we can discuss:
-What is a zine? And its purpose?
-How can zines be used to struggle against violence?
-Ideas for collective zines.
-Are there more cost effective, sustainable ways to create zines?
Using our ideas we will make a zine creation of activist visions. I plan on passing around several topic pages with which participants can work in solidarity to create radical words of struggle in poetry, prose, or art. Then we will begin to create a collective zine. I will provide scissors, paper, pattern pages, pictures, and markers and plan to make copies at the conclusion of the workshop. The juxtaposition of creations and progressive concepts will establish a new form of action to challenge white supremacist, capitalist, heterosexist, patriarchy.
